wachi is a five-piece rock band formed in Guangdong Province, China. The name "wachi" (frog pool) comes from a puddle in the yard where the band members often played together and the tadpoles in the pond grew into frogs the following year.
The industrial economy of southern Chinese cities, the long rain season and summer in the subtropics hasmade their music impulsive and vigorous. Their confusion and sadness in exploring themselves and the society add a moist blue to the music of wachi.
After having released several self-produced demos in 2020, wachi quickly gained attention from the Chinese independent music industry. Their live performance is rich in emotional tension. Influenced by Avant-Garde Rock, College Rock, and Ethnic Music, wachi's music has a dynamic structure and diverse and recognizable melody lines. Their lyrics are full of vivid and concise imagery, constructing diverse and interesting metaphors.
In the new album "Outing" released by wachi in the summer of 2023, there are crisp Spanish rhythms, Dombra rhythms, Northwest Xintianyou, and Miao folk songs. The five members of the band interact and respond to one another in an improvisational way. Words, melodies, and rhythms grow together in the rehearsal room. The vocals and melodies roam freely. The two guitars sometimes talk to each other and sometimes walk side by side. The drums and bass steadfastly search for the weight of the melody, forming a vigorous rhythm.
wachi consists of Jin Yiyi (lead singer), Disheng and Hao (guitar), Sanfeng (bass), and Wu Chuhao (drummer).
